Geriatric Physiotherapy

Vision

Abilities tend to decline with age, especially physical abilities. This is the physiotherapist’s main area of expertise. It is not just muscles and joints that weaken with age. Our senses and organs also decline, whether we have an illness or not. Geriatric physiotherapy is complex because it generally involves addressing not just one but several problems. There may also be social, mental or psychiatric issues. All of this can make these problems difficult to solve. You are likely to require help from other practitioners as well as a physiotherapist. Combining different forms of care is also far from easy. In these situations, interdisciplinary cooperation is essential. So your geriatric physiotherapist will always seek to cooperate.

When you have complex health problems, daily functioning becomes more difficult. Exercises that improve your ability to perform certain actions also become more difficult. You are keen to exercise but are not sure how to go about it. Based on your response to questions and questionnaires, and by conducting measurements and observations, I can help you understand your strengths and limitations. I can also explain the risk factors for falls in your case and/or recommend specific exercises.

If you come to me for advice, it is helpful if you can bring a detailed referral letter. This should include information about any other medical conditions, illnesses, surgery and any medication you are taking. I also like to see reports issued by medical specialists.

Consultations and treatments can be provided at the practice or at your home.

Muscle strength exercises

It is very important to maintain your muscle strength. Without muscle strength, you cannot be independent. This is because without muscle strength, there is very little you can do. You cannot get out of bed at home or go to the shops for groceries. You cannot walk from the living room to the bathroom to wash or use the toilet. Daily tasks such as cooking and cleaning also require muscle strength. If you want to get stronger and are prepared to exercise, you can start doing muscle strength exercises at any age even if you have never done them before. Therefore, muscle strength evaluation is always part of the assessment process and muscle strength exercises are always included in the advice.

Fall prevention

The practice does not provide fall prevention services.  But when discussing the results of the assessment, fall risk factors are always clearly addressed. During this discussion we will answer questions such as: “What is possible, and what is not possible?” “Can you safely exercise on your own or not?” “Is there an exercise class nearby or not?”

Specific patient groups

Parkinson’s

Please note! I do not offer individual or group exercise classes at the practice

My services consist primarily of (geriatric) physiotherapy coaching and guidance throughout the progression of the disease. We can meet at regular intervals, say once every three or six months, to monitor your physical, psychological, and social problems.

Parkinson’s disease is one of many movement disorders. I have a special interest in this group of neurological disorders. I often attend international conferences on the subject and I am a member of ParkinsonNet (a patient-centered, network-based healthcare initiative). So you can count on my extensive knowledge of Parkinson’s disease, Parkinsonism and other movement disorders.

ParkinsonNet has one goal: to guarantee the best possible care for people suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

By choosing ParkinsonNet, you choose better Parkinson’s care. You can rely on professionals who will support each other in caring for you as their patient.
